It's here folks! Competition time has arrived.
What can you make with Umbrella Print's Trimmings?
A few things have changed this year ... for a start we will have two winners!...a People's Choice and a Judge's Choice! We have four amazing VIP judges this year to help us choose a Judge's Choice winner- Joel Henriques from Made by Joel, Kim Kight from True Up, Irene Hoofs from Bloesem and Ebony from Hello Sandwich!!!

and we are also making things a little easier we hope and super fun!

It's really simple
1. Buy your Umbrella Prints Trimmings from our BigCartel shop or Etsy shop they still cost just $10/pack.
2. Photograph your pack with it's special competition label
3. Make the most spectacularly stunning thing/s you can from that one packet

Here are a few guidelines to help at this stage

--We love to see your ideas but if you do use someone else's pattern please credit them

--You are welcome to enter the competition as many times as you like, but you must use one Trimmings pack per entry.

--You can read this 'taking a good photo tutorial' here to make sure you photographs are clear and inviting to look at

4. Then, upload your gorgeous photos to any online platform: blog, flickr, instagram or website etc (please note we wont be able use images from Facebook or locked Flickr pics!)
5. Email us umbrellaprints@yahoo.com.au with the URL to tell us you have uploaded images to your chosen online site

6. on May 31 WE WILL PIN your pics TO OUR 2012 COMPETITION BOARD ON PINTEREST : If you are not sure what this means, please click here for more information.

7.Between the 1st and the 7th of June (EST) come visit our Pinterest competition board to see what amazing things have been made by our entrants. Pin one or pin a few favourites it's your choice :-)

8. The person with the most repins from our Umbrella Prints Trimmings Competition board will be the Peoples Choice WINNER! :-)!

9. The person who gets the most Special Guest Judge votes will be the Special Guest Judge WINNER! Yey!

I can also see a few pieces by Yardage Girl in the mix. This quilt is now being cuddled by a little boy in East Timor. Joanna makes beautiful quilts there are more here!

We are huge fans of Joel's enthusiasm for getting creative with children at home.

About three years ago Joel bought a packet of Trimmings from us .. and we actually remember making the packet because we noticed a boy was buying Trimmings... the first boy.. we wondered what he was going to make... Amy even recalls giving her 'Lady' print a little kiss goodbye as it was the last little trimming left from her solo LADY exhibition in the SALA Festival 2009.

Some time later Joel emailed us to show us his awesome little creations.. he had cleverly used the tiniest morsels to decorate a dolls house interior... we thought he was super!
Now years on from that project Joel has his very own awesome book AND he was on the Martha Stewart show sharing his doll house project.... and look! Amy's Lady print has resurfaced on the wall of this very chic interior... I wish my house looked like that!

I thought I would put together a really pretty collection of Umbrella Prints' latest colours ... subtle and soft...
...But no matter what I do I get BIG BEAUTIFUL COLOUR! oh well bold and gorgeous it will have to be then.

We really were hoping to announce the 2012 Umbrella Prints Trimmings Competition before the end of the week but to be honest Amy and I couldn't agree on which packets of trimmings would be the prettiest for the photo! So many to choose from.. maybe we should just photograph them all.....

Look out for our big announcement early next week and in the mean time you can drool over this colour combination... only the clever ones will have snapped up some of that gorgeous Celadon and Cherry Blossom in Hearts (all sold out!) Not to worry though we still have some Patchwork II in Momo, Lady Grey, Terracotta & Smokey Black as well as Grand Hearts in Bosc Pear

First Day Back

Term starts for Lily today but the poor little sod has a tummy bug... so to cheer her up I patched up a new placemat for her using the fabric she designed in the holidays (her's is the big peachy blossom centre, so pretty).
We did sunprinting with Inkodye in the studio... the Holiday Workshop children painted their fabric (lovely UmbrellaPrints' Natural Hemp/Cotton) with a selection of colourful Inkodye, placed cut paper shapes ontop and then waited a few minutes for it to expose in the sun.. we had so much fun!
The rest of the placemat has been made with trimmings of Umbrella Prints trimmings... I keep every teensy scrap ...some have been dyed too. Which reminds me .. Amy & I will be announcing the 2012 Umbrella Prints Trimmings Competition very soon .. this week perhaps.
I will have to make some more placemats I just love them... love making them.. not only are they terribly useful & pretty but they are also fun, quick & simple and they use up scraps!.. you can't get much better crafting than that.
You can find the placemat instructions in my book .. but it's really simple.
All you need are:
    Enough scraps to patch together a top piece that measures approx. 30cm X 40cm
    A basecloth piece to match 30cm x 40cm
    Some natural cotton batting 30cm x 40cm
    And your scissors, iron & sewing machine (however you can sew this by hand)
1. Patch your top piece
2. Place the top piece right sides facing to the basecloth
3. Place the facing fabrics ontop of the batting and pin to keep in place (mind you this is so small I can never be bothered with the pins)
4. Now start sewing half way down the right hand edge of the sandwiched fabrics, using a 5mm seem allowance.... keep going all the way around but leave a 4-5cm gap so that you can turn it right sides out
5. Before you turn it right sides out and iron it nice and flat .. remember to trim the edges and clip the corners so they don't bunch
6. Now that it is nice and flat we're ready to sew the gap closed and quilt it all in one go... yep!
Start sewing at the begining of the gap, nice and close to the edge with a 3-4mm seem allowance and keep going all the way around .... right round again until you are approx. 3cm in from the right hand edge so that you can start quilting vertically.
Once you get to the top of your first quilted line, instead of cutting the thread and starting again.. turn the placemat 90 degrees and keep going along the top seem a few more centimetres then sew your way back down to the bottom seem etc.. until you are all done.. you probably need to sew 8-10 verticle quilt lines. Voila!

These lovely chairs are upholstered in our Hearts (in Silky Oak) and Hearts in (StormBoy Blue) hand screen printed organic fabric. Carly and I designed these colours to look fabulous together and so they do thanks to the talented Anna Graham aka noodlehead; more pics here and here.

We have so many wonderful new things to share that I just don't know where to begin! We of course had a very special delivery at Umbrella Prints HQ a couple of weeks ago ... but that deserves it's very own post so I will share those adorable photos soon...

for now ... I will quickly mention that Umbrella Prints is going to be at the Australian Quilt Market this weekend! our very first trade show... I am super excited because we have our new quilters cotton collection RockGarden to share. Please do pop over and say hi if you are going to be there, I would love to catch up...

We have a lovely stockist in Singapore called Precip and they have a schmicko new website.

Precip sells a range of our organic hemp/cotton fabrics and a few really nice items made from our fabric; for example wall clocks, stretched canvases, passport covers, brooches and other homewares.

Yvonne from Precip has put in a lot of thought and time into her ranges and always credits us for our work. She has been kind and courteous and always gets our fabrics names and colours correct. Available Now :: Patchwork II

Patchwork II by Umbrella Prints

So far we have managed to share 9 out of 36 new patterns (in 6 colours.. that's 216 options people!!!) that feature with in our PATCHWORK II fabric. Amy and I tried to choose a few designs to sew up two cushions today but the options were endless i tell you ..ENDLESS! a great way to spend the afternoon.

In the end we chose the Bakelite Blue for a cheaters quilted cushion .. the great thing being it can be whipped up in 15 minutes! and then we picked our fave Shimmy Rock Dots in their two sizes and 5 colours to make a real patchwork cushion. So much fun.

The other fabulous thing is that we now need to choose a couple designs to make into full meterage... I am voting for Clover in Static.. but maybe Shimmy Rock Dots or Big Clouds? What do you think?

It will most likely take us the rest of the year to share all 36 designs .. The new colours are Bakelite Blue, Terracotta and Lady Grey & the other three colours are Smokey Black, Momo & Flamingo.

Cloudy but fine

Meet old friend Clouds and new friends Big Clouds and Cloud Dots. We are asked for meterage of this pattern all the time but until then they are all featured in Umbrella Prints Patchwork II which will be available later this afternoon in our online shops if we don't get too many interruptions!

The Cloud Dots create a beautiful soft mid-tone and are so teeny-tiny cute up close like little droplets of water waiting to fall from the clouds.

Rock Dots

Today's new pattern, featured in Umbrella Prints Patchwork II is Shimmy Rock Dots; shimmy because in this particular application the dots create a wave-like effect as if they are dancing. This new design came about as a result of an experiment with some ink and a pencil. We reckon this design is a little bit earthy, a little bit vintage and a little bit modern- a bit like us :)

The top colour, we have named Bakelite Blue, is a new colour for us.

night and day

Bird in Paradise Night is the reverse of Bird in Paradise. It creates such a different effect we can't decide which version we like better so we have included both in Umbrella Prints Patchwork II.

We have designed 'day' and 'night' versions of a number of our patterns. Very excited about this work.
So, put your night goggles on and we will show you more over the next few days!

Flashback! September 2008 we brought out our Umbrella Prints Patchwork fabric 1;
now it is 2011 and well overdue for Umbrella Prints Patchwork fabric II which Carly and I have been enjoying working on for a while now.
We would like to show you the new designs within the Patchwork, each design a pattern in its own right and possibly meterage in its own right soon too.

Patchwork II will be available to purchase online next Friday in 6 beautiful colours.

Quilter Kate Conklin has designed a clever quilt pattern where you can use just the smallest pieces of your favourite fabrics. Kate has designed this quilt with Oasis fabrics by Umbrella Prints and visited us in the studio today so we could see the sweet quilt in all its quilty goodness. We played swapsies and showed Kate and her sister a sneak peak of our next quilter's cotton collection coming late 2011.

The lovely Mathilda's Market have released their second online magazine and Umbrella Prints have a huge give away within on page 51. Our friend Susanna and her design firm Enoki have designed these beautiful Cumulus Pendant lights which can be ordered in a a number of elegant plain fabrics or in Umbrella Prints printed fabric!
The range recently expanded to include a wall and floor version.

Studio Friday

Amy and I have been playing in the studio today ... printing up pretty little flowers and leaves on paper .. and not just for fun but because we are designing our new collection of quilters weight fabric... what do you think? Here at Umbrella Prints HQ we like to start our creative process with sketches and real time artworks before we hit the macs.
I could have sat there all day carving from EzyCarve ... it is so much easier than lino but it does have a slightly different feel to it... and block prints certainly work better from lino and wood when it comes to printing on fabric..

Elephants

We have received a number of calls/emails these past weeks about our screen printed Elephants on organic hemp/cotton. Whilst we have completely sold out and will reprint in the next few months, Evoke Yarn and Fabric have quite a few colours still available for purchase online here ,even in our Silky Oak which I want to buy back because I miss it so much!

And of course if you like miniature Elephant fabric they are available in our new quilter's weight cotton in Umbrella Prints's online shop and many other shops now too; stockists list is coming as soon as possibly possible.

Oh I love this! Laurie Wisbrun (USA) has been super busy writing her book on textile printing and producing her own range of fabric, so I'm glad she has at least have one cup of tea (evidence below), a stall at Surtex and a new collection with Robert Kaufmen!!! Congratulations xxx

The mini quilt Laurie made with her own fabric Scarlet Fig along with Summersville and Umbrella Prints' fabrics is gorgeous in greys, blacks and acid yellow.

this week in a snap

We have had a great week designing a second range of quilter's cotton fabrics. When we get the rare chance to sit down for more than three seconds and get stuck into designing I soon remember why I love what I do. 4 new designs are nearly complete and over night I missed them!!! Came right in this morning and turned the computers on so we could see them again :-) always a good sign.

We would like to use our hand printed colours in our quilter's cotton range but are restricted to the Pantone chart. How spoilt does this sound but we rarely find the exact colours we want in Pantone charts. None of our hand screen printed colours ie Kimono Red, EK 50's green etc are matched perfectly in the Pantone chips which is why we end up sending bits of favourite T-shirts, scoops of sand; ripped up magazines excetera through the mail to our screen printer like mad women . A friend once said "what? aren't there enough colours in Pantone for ya?" hell yeah!

We are also compiling a list of Umbrella Prints online and retail stockists which will be added to our website soon; exciting! Wishing you a happy weekend xox

While ..umm .. spending far too much time over here I came across this very sweet image of our fabric by Lisa Spangler, very fittingly pinned to a real life pin board.... (Lisa entered our trimmings comp with some cute collages and a cloud mobile) ... Consider yourself warned.. if you have not been over to Pinterest yet.. I dare you .. double dare you... enter at your own risk in fear of becoming hopelessly addicted (as I am and Amy is too!!).

You know I had no idea people had been pinning our fabric!? sounds odd but it honestly hadn't crossed my mind until I spied this and thought I should do a pinterest search for Umbrella Prints... how cool! and humbling that there are so many lovely people out there who think our fabric pin worthy. xxxx

Siobhan's quilt

Speaking of lovely quilts Siobhan Roger's has made a beautiful piece for the Victorian Cancer Council Art Awards - ceremony and opening is the 10th July. Her quilt which is mounted in a simple white frame features Umbrella Prints trimmings, Amy Butler, Japanese shibori amongst others and some sweet hand stitching. A lot of thought has gone into this work and we are so glad it has been accepted into the awards to raise money for such an important cause.

Hop Skip Jump is a favourite amongst so many people and it's no surprise...Fiona's meticulous attention to detail-check; lovely eye for gorgeous fabric combinations-check; amazing unique quality children's toys- check; and a sweet down to earth lovely lady and friend-check.

Here is what Fiona has been up to with Umbrella Prints fabric lately. If you have extra beady eyes you may have noticed the odd piece of our fabric in the ears and outfits of her amazing toys over the years- I haven't been fast enough to snaffle one up for myself yet before someone else but one day...

Continuing on with the quilty theme here is a cute piece by One Flew Over in a fresh mix of lemon and green fabrics with a dash of Umbrella Prints's Olive Elephants, Love List in Royal Beige and Clouds in Starfruit. Yum here!

And Carly has been busy too making the below beautiful quilt for her couch in blacks and blues, mustards, greys, denim with tiny grabs of pink and rich yellow.

I finally had more than a moment this week to write from a personal perspective about Carly's just published gorgeous book Little Artists Handmade!

If you are a fan of Australian fabric you will love to find scattered in amongst the pages of Little Artists Handmade many inspiring photographs of Umbrella Prints in use along with Carly's daughter Lily's patterns. Penguin also used our FanFlower design on page details, to separate chapters and as collage details throughout the publication which was a lovely surprise.

I could go on and on about it but nothing beats actually having a real look. Little Artists Handmade is available here, at Nest Studio of course and at all good bookstores.

The very delightful Alia & Scott from White Wall Photography popped into the studio this morning to shoot our creative space... and I LOVE this photo! I love how the colours are all melty and pretty together. It is refreshing to have another set (two sets) of creative eyes look around the studio to pick out new little spaces and capture them on virtual film.... I have never looked at our fabric at this angle.

Scott & Alia made all of us in the studio feel so comfortable... you know how awkward having your photo can be... and Scott seemed to capture the fun an light of the studio in just a couple of clicks! It's no wonder their showcase of wedding photos is so beautiful.

Have a look at the lovely quilt Kate Conklin made with our coming soon sewing fabrics! Carly and I met Kate at a fair in Melbourne last year and again in the shop recently; she managed to sew this quilt with new babe in arms. We have two gorgeous freshly upholstered chairs at Umbrella Prints headquarters. This one here has been reupholstered in our Rembrant's Pear in Grand Hearts on organic hemp cotton. We took the stunning chair outside (between sun showers) using what we have, which is the uber funky industrial look of our surroundings, something we have always been meaning to do ... Nice photo hey!

Enoki new product design with Umbrella Prints and Marrimeko

Our friends at Enoki design firm specialise in visual branding and interior architecture amongst many other amazing things and they design a range of unique furniture and product. On Friday night they will be launching their new range of product at Bowerbird Bazaar 2-9pm.

Puzzle (see in white form above) is a table and bench set which fits together to form a cube and can be adapted and moved to multi-purpose as blocks, stage, puppet stage and beyond.

Today in the studio I couldnt walk past this gorgeousness without getting my camera out. A little quilty made by Carly from Umbrella Prints Trimmings in a precious spare moment; our bowl of chips not the fattening kind the colour kind and painted papers made up so we don't waste paint in the studio.

In the midst of mountains of emails and phone calls and admin things-to-do I get lost sometimes and quite frustrated and flat and ask Where's the art?; my anchor, my passion and my inspiration....both Carly and I need more time to do what we do best which is make and draw....but where does the day go?

I cannot believe it has actually been two years since out last Trimmings Competition and how much time flies!
The last winner in 2009 was the AMAZING Lisa Stubbs from Yorkshire, England who created a whole suite of beautiful fabric collages using the teensiest- tiniest little bits and pieces of our fabric.

Have a look at her gorgeous work for Umbrella Print's Trimmings Competition 2009 can you spy our fabrics within?:

We bought this one from Lisa it is so gorgeous.

We had many gorgeous entries in 2009, from little patchworked giraffe to pin cushions and fabric coasters, carefully collaged trees and many many more wonderful contributions.

We chose Lisa as the winner for the natural way she interpreted our fabrics into her own visual language; the way she had so carefully considered the tiny shapes and made use of the smallest pieces. She made the fabrics hers and that's what its ALL about.

We soon found out that Lisa is also a talented printmaker and illustrator and have since stocked her work at Nest Studio. Thank you Lisa!

Amazingly after making all of the above I think I remember Lisa saying she still had little bits left of her Trimmings Pack!

This colour could not be anymore gentle and peaceful... whenever I'm amping up and stressing out Carly pulls out a piece of this fabric and I feel all better. I could meditate on our new colour Celadon forever and I've been waiting to see this colour in print for so long (in another life I sold Japanese ceramics in celadon and beautiful dark brown tenmokku glazes) and now it is here brought to you in the curvy shape of our Hearts fabric.

The ancient Chinese translucent pottery glaze is elegant, mysterious, watery and quiet. A colour once described by Chinese artisans as 'beyond description'.

We have a new arrival of Umbrella Prints Hearts hand screen printed in Red, Celadon, Cherry Blossom and Mid Century Blue. These are not the Grand Hearts these are the wee ones you could hold one in the palm of your hand. From a distance these lovely hearts designed by Carly create a kind of honeycomb stripe.

Whilst I'm a lover of warm red (ie our Kimono Red) this Red has a cooler edge and works well with many other colours like natural linen, grey and blue in interiors.

I really want to write more about the other colours we have created for this printed fabric, but tomorrow, because I have a twitch in my eye which means I need some zzz and I could be here for hours if someone doesn't take charge.

Umbrella Prints has been noticing entrants popping up for our Trimmings Competition over here! so much fun keepem coming!

The number of entrants so far does not correlate to the number of packets we have been sending out by far so...I have a feeling there are a lot of you keeping things very close to you chest ha ha and your not going to reveal until the last minute! There could be some clever strategy plays going on.

However, posting a picture of what you have made from your Trimmings packet now could work in your favour as far as there will be more time for more people to look at what you have made; which could be good if your work is a slow burner and you want your work to 'grow' on other people in order that you get their vote.

Or maybe I just can't handle the suspense :)

A new window; I wanted it to look warm, country and autumny. The hawthorn berries come from my mum's garden. These days I take a picture and then turn everything around to face the street so I can avoid all of the reflection. What do you think of the new Kimono Red FanFlower dress?

A lady came into Nest Studio and bought this beautiful Aboriginal artwork.

she totally coordinated with this painting in her brown, rust, olive and dark apricot outfit and exclaimed "these are my favourite colours!!!" love it

Umbrella Prints still aiming for the perfect Bosc Pear colour for our Grand Hearts fabric. So happy when I spotted these at the supermarket they are in season I'll take that as a good sign.

My chair also sold this week this is me rushing to get a proper photo of it before it leaves the shop. Mental note is to take proper photos OF EVERYTHING...

Is the competition international?
Yes; we have sent trimmings packs as far and wide as Hawaii, Denmark and Japan.
If a posty can get there in time and you have a letterbox you can enter!

but I can't sew?
we never said you had to sew anything x

How do I take a nice photograph of my trimmings and my creation for Flickr?
Our top tips for taking nice, clear photographs are

1. don't use a flash indoors...ever.... it drains colour like a sponge
2. get enough light, natural light is best
3. take the wrapping off your trimmings pack :-)
4. get in real close
5. use a plain background
6. lock in your focus

Can I combine your trimmings with other fabrics in my project?
Of course! but please acknowledge the designer of the other fabrics too.

Therese from Craft Relief is doing a wonderful job running her non-profit online shop which raises donations for QLD flood relief. Every lovingly made product in store has been donated by crafters, designers and artists.

We have donated some Umbrella Prints' remnants and trimmings all of the profits of which go to RSPCA's QLD Flood Appeal. I will never forget the recent imagery of stranded farm animals, horses swimming and lost pets in distress. One of our favourite products over at Umbrella Prints is the Trimmings packets... We spend lots of time picking and packing and ironing these little packs and they give us a lot of joy.  But what is most intriguing is what ya'll do with these Trimmings?

In 2010 we held a Trimmings competition and it was so much fun that we thought we would do it again.... we met so many of our lovely customers and it was a treat to see what they were making... so much creativity!

So here's how it works

1. Buy a packet of Trimmings from the Big Cartel shop ONLY

2. Join our Flickr group

3. Upload a pic of your packet to Flickr with it's special Trimmings Competition paper label

4. Then upload photos to Flickr of all the beautiful things you were able to make from one packet. Remember to tag them umbrellaprints, trimmings2011.

It's a brand new shiny year, what better time to show some new work by Umbrella Prints.
We were hard at work last year and have designed a range of beautiful handmade silver and fabric earrings to go with our other silver jewellery (currently all sold out).

One of my favourite memories is riding my bike in Kyoto under cherry blossom trees raining petals like snow. These earrings remind me of that mono no aware feeling.

Umbrella Prints first brought out Bird in Paradise in 2008. With an impossibly intricate repeat, an allover lace-like pattern, imaginary birds in an illustrated leafy wilderness we could not find anything like it on the market.

Nearly two years later we have started getting emails, phone calls, a publisher and magazine photo shoot requests for Bird in Paradise. We are so glad we kept faith in this design.

A new short run has just arrived in colours Bambi, Flamingo and Olive hand screen printed onto our custom made natural organic hemp/cotton. It is available as meterage and in 50cm x 60cm pieces in both our online shops and at Nest Studio now.

Textile designer Laurie Wisburn has been writing The Complete Guide to Designing & Printing which will be published next year by Rotovision (Europe) and Chronicle Books (US). We are allowed to see/show this beautiful cover.

Laurie kindly wrote to share a few behind the scenes pictures for the book which include our Bird in Paradise in Olive (sold out; but reprinting now); exciting ! It must be so hard to keep all but a few details a secret but I do know that it looks to be a great book to read if you are interested in the design process, tutorials and interviews with yummy textile designers like skinny laminx.

Liz sent Umbrella Print's some photographs of the gorgeous quilt she sewed for baby Juliet- first quilt she's ever made what's more! This quilt features Umbrella Print's Wild Grasses fabric in red; also Ink & Spindle's Wren fabric and some wonderful spots and stripes.

Thought I would let you know about an exhibition we are participating in called "Celebrating Motherhood", organised by Amelia McFarlane, coming up in Sydney next week Tuesday.

Artists include: Marnie Wark, Kirsty Shadiac, Megan Morton, Rebecca Cool (event photo), James Gordon, Lisa Cooper, Tory Bauer, Minnie Taylor, Sam Barrett, Jodie Fried, Greig Fraser, Imogen Wiseman, Amikka May, Kara Loan, Sophie DuBois, Lauren Horton, Amanda McLaughlin, Janet McLearie, Krew Boylan, Umbrella Prints, Rebecca Trevitt, & Rachel Castle, Amelia McFarlane.

Umbrella Prints has donated 2 major hand printed works for this show and though we can't be there we hope the exhibition raises lots of money for Breast Cancer Research and Amelia's mother, Judi McFarlane's treatment.

Umbrella Prints is now at Elissa's fabulous new shop Evoke Yarn and Fabric (Lismore, NSW).
This stunning bag was made by Kirsten it totally makes me smile!!!
If your wondering why we have no Elephants in our shops it because Elissa has them all :-) x
